Premium High Barrier Flexible Packaging engineered to maximize product shelf life and preserve freshness.
EVOH, aluminum foil, and VMPET barrier rollstock engineered for oxygen- and moisture-sensitive products. Quantitative OTR < 0.5 cc/m²/day. FDA/EU certified. IMA, TEEPACK, FUSO, MAISA compatible. No MOQ for samples.

High Barrier Flexible Packaging is rollstock film incorporating specialized barrier materials — EVOH (ethylene-vinyl alcohol), aluminum foil lamination, VMPET (vacuum-metallized PET), or PVDC coating — that dramatically reduce oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) compared to standard PE or PP films.
Unlike standard flexible packaging films that provide only moisture resistance, high-barrier films are engineered for oxygen-sensitive, aroma-sensitive, or light-sensitive products where package integrity directly determines shelf life and product efficacy.
XLD supplies High-Barrier Flexible Packaging as rollstock film for co-packers, private label brands, and contract manufacturers producing packaging for coffee, health supplements, dried foods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Our barrier rollstock feeds into IMA, TEEPACK, FUSO, and MAISA form-fill-seal lines producing fin-seal sachets, pillow bags, and three-side-seal pouches.

Oxygen, moisture, and light are the three primary degradation vectors for sensitive products. High-barrier film addresses all three simultaneously.
Oxygen transmission is measured in cc/m²/day. Standard PE film achieves OTR of 200–400 cc/m²/day. EVOH barrier film reduces this to <0.5 cc/m²/day — a 400–800x improvement. For oxygen-sensitive products (coffee, vitamins, dried meats), this difference translates directly into shelf life: months vs. weeks.
Moisture vapor transmission measured in g/m²/day. Standard films achieve MVTR of 5–15 g/m²/day. High-barrier structures reach <0.5 g/m²/day. For hygroscopic products (coffee, powdered supplements), moisture ingress causes caking, clumping, and microbial growth.
Light barrier prevents photodegradation of light-sensitive actives (vitamins A, B12, essential oils). Aluminum foil lamination provides near-total UV and visible light blockage. AlOx coatings offer transparent barrier with partial light blocking while maintaining product visibility.
Aroma barrier prevents flavor migration — critical for multi-flavor co-packing environments or products where cross-contamination is a concern.
Use this three-factor selection framework to identify the correct barrier film for your application and packaging line.
Factor 1: Product Sensitivity Profile
| Product Category | Primary Risk | Recommended Barrier Structure |
|---|---|---|
| Whole bean / ground coffee | Oxygen + moisture + aroma | Aluminum foil laminate or EVOH |
| Instant coffee / freeze-dried | Oxygen priority | EVOH barrier film |
| Protein powders / BCAAs | Moisture priority | VMPET or PVDC coated film |
| Probiotics / live cultures | Oxygen + moisture (strict) | Aluminum foil laminate |
| Vitamins (powder sachets) | Oxygen + moisture | EVOH or VMPET |
| Dried fruits / jerky | Moisture primary | VMPET or PVDC |
| Pharmaceutical sachets | Regulatory + barrier | Aluminum foil laminate |
| Cosmetics (powder samples) | Light + moisture | AlOx or VMPET |
| Aromatics (sachets, spices) | Aroma barrier priority | Aluminum foil laminate |
| Multi-serving pouches (snacks) | Cost + barrier balance | VMPET or PVDC |
Factor 2: Shelf Life Target
| Target Shelf Life | Recommended Structure |
|---|---|
| 6–12 months | VMPET or PVDC coated |
| 12–24 months | EVOH barrier film |
| 24+ months | Aluminum foil laminate |
| Regulatory/pharma standard | Aluminum foil laminate (full OTR <0.1) |
Factor 3: Machine Compatibility
XLD High Barrier Flexible Packaging is produced as rollstock film for dry goods packaging lines. Compatible machine brands:

EVOH (ethylene-vinyl alcohol) provides the highest oxygen barrier per thickness unit but is moisture-sensitive at high RH. Aluminum foil lamination provides near-total OTR block (<0.1 cc/m²/day) but adds weight and cost. VMPET (vacuum-metallized PET) offers mid-range barrier (OTR <2 cc/m²/day) at lower cost and weight than foil. Select based on your shelf-life target and budget.
Typical values by structure: EVOH film achieves OTR <0.5 cc/m²/day; aluminum foil laminate achieves OTR <0.1 cc/m²/day; VMPET achieves OTR <2 cc/m²/day. MVTR values are product-structure and thickness-dependent. Request our technical data sheet with specific test conditions.
Standard high-barrier structures (PET/EVOH/PE, PET/AL/PE) are multi-material laminates with limited recyclability. Mono-material recyclable barrier options (PE/EVOH/PE coextrusion, PP-based structures) are available for markets with kerbside collection streams. Discuss your sustainability targets with our team for material options.
For US market: FDA 21 CFR food-contact regulations apply to the specific polymer layers in contact with product. For EU market: EU Regulation 10/2011 and REACH compliance. We provide declarations of conformance and SDS for each structure. ISO 9001:2015 covers manufacturing quality management.
Standard barrier structures ship in 10–15 business days. MOQ is 300 kg for production rolls; sample rolls from 30 kg with no MOQ barrier. Custom barrier formulations (specific OTR target, thickness, certification) may require 15–20 days for qualification. Contact us early for regulatory-grade barrier requirements.
